How the motion sensor (the pedometer) works

2018-09-10

A pedometer is a tool that measures calories or calorie consumption by counting the number of steps, distance, speed, time, etc., to control the amount of exercise, to prevent insufficient exercise, or to exercise excessively.

The electronic pedometer is mainly composed of a vibration sensor and an electronic counter. When people walk, the center of gravity must move up and down. The up and down displacement of the waist is most obvious, so the pacer is most suitable for hanging on the belt.

principle:

Old-fashioned pedometers use mechanical motion to drive the sensor. The working principle is generally to use a small weight that can be moved freely to generate the mutual motion between the device and the weight by using the physical inertia of the device when moving, and then use the sensing component. To check its action, the sensor can be mechanically switched (allowing two pieces of metal to be turned on or off, or by photoelectric switch, or by attaching a magnet to the weight to detect the Hall element) and counting by electronic circuit. Subsequent work, such as: counting, storing, calculating, displaying, etc.

The new type is MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) using a three-axis accelerometer, without deliberate consideration of the direction of wearing, and with the MCU, you can analyze whether the vibration is really generated by walking, and more accurately calculate the energy consumption.
